Science to Me
As a scientist, I am often surprised by how often I hear "Oh I could never do that", or "Science isn't for me", or "Oh I was bad at that in school". To me, this seems like it is a fundamental misunderstanding of what science is. I am now going to argue that basic scientific principles are applicable everywhere, and everyone should apply them!
What basic principles? Science has a million different faces, from biology to physics, from computer science to geology, from psychology to chemistry and a million other disciplines in between. But all of these rest on a two basic principles - test your ideas!
For thousands of years people argued that beauty is truth, and therefore it was more important to have beautiful ideas than correct ones. And while there have always been people who have tested their ideas, it is only relatively recently that this idea has become mainstream. In the two hundred odd years since it has been accepted, the world has changed immeasurably for the better.
And that is why science is for everyone. By testing your ideas, you can make the world a better place. And at the end of the day, what more can we ask for in life?
